toastmastersにおける4回目のスピーチをしてきました。今回のタイトルは「From Night Owl to Early Bird」。 [Opening] Early bird or night owl, which type does you belongs to? Fellow toastmasters and welcome guests. For more than ten years, I had been a night owl. But recently, I have changed my lifestyle from a night owl to an early bird. Then I started to realize that there are some benefits of the early bird lifestyle. So today, I want to talk about the change of my lifestyle. [Night Owl Lifestyle] When I entered university, I started to have living alone. I felt that I was free from my parents’ supervision. There was no wonder why my lifestyle became like a night owl. After I graduated the university, I joined a software company. This company employs flextime-working system without core time. It means if I can finish my task within a deadline, I can control my office hours. To be honest, because the company has the flextime system, I chose it. At that time, I wanted to avoid the commuter rush hour. For a rural university student, the metropolitan train rush was so fearful. There had been no incentives to change my night owl lifestyle. [Why I changed my style] So why did I change my wake up time? The main reason was for test preparation. Business schools require their applicant to have test score of GMAT. GMAT stands for Graduate Management Admission Test. It is like center test to enter a Japanese National University. And I also had to take TOEFL test because I am a non-native English speaker. So I had to make time to study for these exams. There were two choices of study hour, before going to bed or before going to the office. I didn’t want to study after I finished my long working hour so I chose to study before going to the office. And in general, start time of these tests is 9:00 AM. Then I had to wake up at around 6:00 AM on the test day. It is not a big deal for an early bird but it is a big deal for a night owl. I had to avoid getting sleepy during the test. But our body rhythm cannot allow us to change its rhythm for only that day. These are the reasons why I wanted to change my wake up time. [How did I change my lifestyle] How did I change it? I learned one principle. If I wanted to wake up early, I had to go to bed early. That’s a simple rule. But it is easier said than done. There were a lot of temptations in the world like late TV programs or The Internet and so on. For example, one of my favorite websites is Wikipedia, an online Encyclopedia. There are a lot of interesting articles on the site so I can easily consume one or two hours to read them. And I also have a habit of reading a book in my bed. Sometimes, I went to bed early but I went to sleep late because I was not able to stop my reading. So I found that if I could cut such useless time, I could make a lot of useful hours. Everybody knows that bat habits are difficult to kick out however it was a good opportunity to check my habit. [What I get from early bird lifestyle] What I get from the early bird lifestyle? I found something was changed in my mind. The main thing was that I become keener to the sense of my time. As a night owl, I didn’t have much sense of saving time. But now, I want to use my time more effectively. And there is another good effect. Many of my coworkers are night owls because of our flextime system. So, if I go to the office at 9:00 AM, there are only a few people in my office. This time is a very good environment to concentrate on my tasks with good feelings. [Conclusion] My first incentive to change of my lifestyle was for a test preparation. But I found that an early bird lifestyle has many benefits. An old man said the early bird gets the worm. I think it is true. So, now, I reached my target score, but I am going to continue my early bird lifestyle.
